Choosing Success

My favourite author, John C. Maxwell, wrote a book called “Success is a Choice”. One of the main things that this idea brings to mind is that success is often one step beyond your comfort zone, and that making excuses in life will send you down the wrong path in life. Also, I have learned from John C. Maxwell that you can either have a victim mindset or a leadership mindset. Having a victim mindset leads you away from success, while having a leadership mindset leads you towards success.

The Victim Mindset

What is the victim mindset? It is the belief that the negative things that happen to you are beyond your control and that you are not responsible for your outcomes. When you operate from this mindset, you see yourself as powerless. You blame other people or external circumstances, and you justify inaction through excuses.

The victim mindset stands in direct opposition to choosing success. If you want to move forward, you must adopt a leadership mindset. A leadership mindset is rooted in ownership. It means taking responsibility for your life, your actions, and your results without blaming others or making excuses. Instead of reacting emotionally, you respond intentionally. You reflect on your experiences, learn from them, and make choices that move you forward.

Consider this example. If you are not elected to a volunteer position you were hoping for, a victim mindset might lead you to blame others, question the process, or dwell on disappointment. A leadership mindset, however, leads you to a different path. You accept the outcome, seek feedback, and evaluate how you can improve. You look for ways to grow so that you are better prepared the next time the opportunity arises.

It is true that some events in life are outside of your control. However, your response is always within your control. That is where your power lies. You can choose to dwell on what went wrong, or you can choose to learn, adapt, and take action.

Choosing success is choosing your response. It is choosing ownership over blame, growth over excuses, and action over stagnation.

Stepping Beyond Your Comfort Zone

I believe that choosing success requires stepping beyond your comfort zone, at least one step at a time. It is easy to remain in the safety of familiar routines and responsibilities. Staying where you are feels comfortable and predictable. But growth does not happen in comfort. It happens when you challenge yourself to do something new, even when it feels uncertain.

Trying something new can lead to mistakes, but mistakes are not failures, they are feedback. They are one of the most powerful ways we learn, improve, and grow.

In Toastmasters, for example, it can be easy to stay within your home club and attend only regular meetings. It is also easy to remain a member without taking on additional responsibility. However, choosing to serve as a club or district officer is a step beyond that comfort zone. It requires courage, commitment, and a willingness to lead, but it also opens the door to tremendous growth and opportunity.

I have taken that step myself by serving as both a club and district officer. Those experiences have expanded my world, introduced me to new people, and provided opportunities I would not have encountered otherwise. More importantly, they have challenged me to grow as a leader and have enriched my life in meaningful ways.

Choosing success means choosing growth, and growth begins the moment you step outside your comfort zone.

Conclusion

Remember that when circumstances happen to you that you have choices to make. You can make excuses for what happened by choosing the victim mindset, or you can take responsibility and choose success by embracing a leadership mindset. A leader does not rely on excuses. A leader takes responsibility for the circumstances in his or her life. A leader also sees mistakes or setbacks as stepping stones on the path to success.

Choosing success can also mean stepping out of your comfort zone. This means success is often one step beyond the easy choices in life.

I encourage you to be a leader and to choose success in life. Who know how much you can achieve with this mindset?
