The Six Dimensions of Self-Directed Leadership

I believe in the power of self-directed leadership and working to master yourself. I have also learned that are six key areas where you can set goals what will transform you into a more effective leader. These areas are the following:

  1. Character and Leadership Growth – Who are you becoming?
  2. Health and Wellness – How are you caring for yourself?
  3. Career and Professional Development – How are you growing professionally?
  4. Relationships and Community – How are you investing in people?
  5. Financial Stewardship – How are you managing your resources?
  6. Service and Impact – How are you making a difference?

In this article I will explore each of these areas in more detail.

Character and Leadership Growth – Who are you becoming?

Character and leadership growth is about becoming a better you. Whether that is building integrity or honing your leadership skills, setting goals in this area can help you to become a stronger leader.

Ways to grow in this area include building integrity. This includes keeping the commitments you make to other people, and the commitments you make to yourself. It also means doing what you say you will do and doing the right thing, even when it is hard.

Another way to build character is step out of your comfort zone and try something new. This will build your courage and self-confidence. It can also lead new skills and new opportunities.

I also encourage you to cultivate a growth mindset. This is the idea that your intelligence, skills, and abilities are not fixed and that you can grow, learn and improve. There is even a book on the growth mindset, written by Carol Dweck. The title of her book is “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success”.

Health and Wellness – How are you caring for yourself?

Leading yourself effectively should include a focus on your health and wellness. If you don’t take care of these aspects of your life, you may find yourself struggling with low energy or even with negative health complications. This can make it difficult to be an effective leader.

What can you do to master your health and wellness? Set goals and build habits that strengthen your body and mind so you can lead with energy and resilience. This includes eating well and staying active.

Mental health is just as important as physical health. I am not an expert on mental health, but some ideas are to make time for things you enjoy and to spend time with friends and family. This can go a long way to helping you have positive mental health.

Career and Professional Development – How are you growing professionally?

Another area to grow yourself in is to set goals to advance your career and to develop yourself professionally. This could include joining an organization like Toastmasters International, where you can build your public speaking and leadership skills. Or it could include joining other groups or organizations that give you opportunities to learn and develop new skills.

Other ways to grow professionally are to change jobs or careers if you feel stuck in your current job. For example, I enjoy software development, but I aspire to a career in management, such as a project manager. This would be a move that would have me growing professionally.

But you don’t have to change jobs or careers to grow professionally. You can also take courses, read books, or find other learning opportunities to grow your skills and to advance in your current career. You could even take on a new hobby to grow professionally.

Relationships and Community – How are you investing in people?

One great way to grow as a leader is to invest in other people. One way to do this is to mentor other people in your organization. I do this as a member of Toastmasters International.

Another way to invest in other people is to give them learning opportunities. If you are a leader in your organization, you can give your team members new assignments outside of their comfort zones. These could include new types of projects that they have not worked on before or stretch assignments that will challenge them to use their skills in new ways ro to build new skills.

Financial Stewardship – How are you managing your resources?

Something a good leader does is to manage his or her resources effectively. This can include being wise with your money and living within your means. This will give you a strong and stable financial foundation to lead from.

Service and Impact – How are you making a difference?

One thing I find truly satisfying in life is serving as a volunteer. More specifically, I serve as a volunteer leader for my Toastmasters club and district. This gives me something meaningful to do outside of work.

Serving as a volunteer can also have a positive impact on the lives of people you support. It can increase your self-confidence and self-esteem. It also looks good on a resume and can be a positive boost to your career.

Conclusion

When striving to be a self-directed leader and to master yourself, set goals in the following key areas:

  1. Character and Leadership Growth – Who are you becoming?
  2. Health and Wellness – How are you caring for yourself?

  5. Financial Stewardship – How are you managing your resources?
